FEMA Grant / AFG Grant Awarded for NO SMOKE Extraction System

Plantation Receives Federal Grant - Protects Environment
by Joel Gordon

The Plantation Fire Department recently received the federal grant as part of the Assistance to Firefighter’s Program. The $93,446 award provides for the installation of "No Smoke" filter devices on all fire department apparatus.

"Diesel exhaust is very sooty," explained Fire Chief Robert Pudney. "Every time we start our trucks, the fire station fills with pollutants." According to the device manufacturer, Ward Diesel, No Smoke is a patented, fully self-contained, completely automatic system that is retrofitted underneath the vehicles. It is designed to trap and remove many of the chemicals and particulate matter associated with diesel smoke, thereby making the exhaust more environmentally safe.

The fire department will begin outfitting its existing fleet of vehicles early this spring. In addition, all new apparatus will come equipped with the No Smoke devices already in place. "This is, by far, the largest grant the department has ever received," explained Pudney. "It’s nice to know this money will not only help the department, but will help protect the environment as well."
